Zeke Swirls, La Cañada Flintridge
Consider this your sign to get out of the heat and visit this friendly neighborhood shop for smoothies, açaí bowls and cold-pressed juices made with clean ingredients: no artificial syrups, ice or extenders. The Harvest açaí bowl was perfectly balanced in flavor and generously sized for sharing; the Joyful smoothie and Restored juice were both delicious and refreshing. Owned by a lovely local family.
Moo Moo Mia, Montrose
After more than ten years of conquering the gelato game, sibling duo Mia and Mark are doing their own thing with deliciously handcrafted ice creams and sorbets in an adorable shop in downtown Montrose. Post-haircut treat, post-anything treat.
Froyo Life, Montrose
A make-your-own froyo shop with a bar full of fun toppings. The kids and I love to make our own cups and sit outside and watch the cars go by.
Perla’s Ice Cream, Glendale
A family-owned, Filipino-inspired ice cream shop with creamy ice cream, floats, and flavors you can’t get anywhere else. I also hear that they’re bringing coffee to the shop soon?! Can’t wait to go back.
ohoo, La Crescenta
Ohoo (오후) means “afternoon” in Korean, which fits because it gets packed with the middle and high school crowd after school. Plenty of reasons to visit in the morning too: LAMILL coffee, premium loose-leaf tea, fruit purées made in-house, French pastries from Oh La La Bakery and fresh bagels from Maury’s. We always leave with a pack of fresh taiyaki, too.
The early-morning move
On hot days, we hit Descanso Gardens, Deukmejian, or a park first thing, then head to one of the spots above. Get to the La Cañada Farmers’ Market (Saturdays) or Montrose Harvest Market (Sundays) early if you can, too.
